Vahaadi’s face
OK since you asked about his nose this is how it is shaped. It’s easier to understand in profile.
Lately I’ve been drawing his nose even a little bigger than this, but this is the basic idea! The dip in the bridge of his nose looks particularly pronounced because of the shape of his forehead and brow.
And since we’re on the topic, here’s more stuff about his face.
His basic eye shape is a slightly rounded parallelogram, and his eyes are so deeply set in his face that they are usually in shadow. He only wears eye makeup when he’s…working. *cringe*
His eyebrows are super angular. They come to a distinct point upward and then slope sharply back down for most of his expressions.
Vahaadi has five piercings in each ear–one in the helix, two in the lobe, and two in the cartilage. I usually draw him with one stud, two medium hoops, and a cuff.
Other facial details I need to definitively nail down are his beard and the gem in his forehead. Sometimes I draw his beard as a sort of arrowhead, sometimes it’s just a strip–sometimes it protrudes off his chin almost an inch and other times it’s super short. I need to decide what it actually looks like. And his gem is sometimes a diamond shape and sometimes I make it star-cut/flat on top. >.> And I’m not even sure about the color. Initially it was red, but that doesn’t really match his palette. I get around thinking about it by hiding it under his hair and/or cowl but I want to do more with it visually. The crest is connected to his djinni magic and glows when he teleports, levitates, or uses his hammerspace. Maybe there’s even a little bolt of magic that zaps out at whatever he’s using his magic on. That will be interesting to play with when he contends with Galal Alim, who has stronger magic. They’d grapple and fight with each other by shooting magic out of their heads!
The Early Days
In the early days of Krissy and Vahaadi’s relationship I imagine that they have their clashes every now and then, especially when Krissy goes out as Spark and is trying extra hard to be a superhero. She’s still pretty self absorbed and Vahaadi’s still pretty bitter, so it doesn’t make for the best dynamic. When I saw this picture in “The Art of Anastasia” I knew I had to draw Spark and Vahaadi that way.
A Place Unexpected
For one of my assignments for my art class I wanted to play with silhouettes and thought I’d try one of Vahaadi in a window looking out into the desert sky. Even though this IS supposed to be Vahaadi and I initially intended it to just be a pretty, meaningless thing, I was struck by how much this design looked like a Christmas card picturing one of the three kings. I even thought I’d continue the series with two other “kings” representing Asia and Africa.
But, I still like the idea that this is Vahaadi wondering at the sign of a new star, heralding the birth of a Savior worlds away. Vahaadi’s not so old that he would have been alive at the time of Christ’s birth, but…the imagery comforts me.
“You may be the only taste of my love Vahaadi will ever know. And I love him.
Did you think you were the only one who does?”
The title is from one of my absolute favorite Christmas songs, How Many Kings.
Pied Piper Guy
I am dumping our ideas about him here so we don’t lose them. We can scrap this post later.
CallyAnn:
My vague idea of how he’d fit into the Loose Canon plot is that he is/was once a narrator like the Merchant of Lost Things that traveled the canons in the guise/role of a bard. Like the merchant, his job was to appear to people and give them guidance. For whatever reason (something painful, dark, and/or insidious) he decided he didn’t want to “tell the stories” anymore and was instead interested in creating his own. He used/uses the power of his canon-bending music to lead characters astray and even right out of their canons, leaving corruption in their wake. He may be just plain crazy/greedy, or he may be a usurping idealist that wants to build his own perfect world by taking the good things from the existing canons and destroying the worlds in the process. He can create corruption monsters that look like creepy rats made of paper and ink and other media substances that serve as his minions/cannon fodder, but he also has a circle of sentient followers, people or even children he’s “collected” from various canons. That will give us the potential to develop an Org XIII type of rogue gallery of demi-villains the lorewalkers have to deal with, each with their own stories, varying motives and allegiance to the Piper. It might be fun to explore a character or two that question the influence of the music over them.
“I gotta go clean my room.”
“Your mother came in…”
Obligatory “oh shoot” face
“She almost caught me. She found the lamp…”
“WHAT”
“I was able to distract her, but she may be on to you. Is it…normal for her to come into your room in the middle of the day?”
“Yeah I guess. If she’s not at work she’ll come in here and tidy up, you know, doing momstuff.” …”darn, I guess I better start picking up after myself or she’ll be in here all the time getting my laundry and fixing my bed and stuff. She’s bound to see you if that keeps up.” *winning smile* “any chance YOU wanna do more chores for me?”
*gives her an affronted look*
“What? Just thought I’d ask.”
“If I clean your room, it will involve arson.”
“you… you would burn my things?…..WITHOUT ME?! I am so mad. If you get to light a bunch if stuff on fire I want to do it too!!! Preferably not in the room I sleep in, though.” *dramasiiiiiiiigh* “Guess I’ll clean it myselfffffff,”
In his head “that was not the answer I expected >.>”
