Facial Expressions Test: The New Mask
I watched the music videos for “Awesome as I want to be” and “Life is a Runway” (Rainbow Dash and Rarity’s songs) animated by the official studios and while the designs aren’t that nice some of the facial expressions were pretty dynamite. I wanted to try them out with Loose Canon Spark and her new mask!
Thinkin’ I was born in the wrong time
So I heard a song on the radio that isn’t really appropriate for Vahaadi and Spark since it’s a guy singing to a girl and it’s a love song, but the beat was so fun and the chorus caught my attention and somehow it inspired this strange pic that really has nothing to do with the song. Enjoy!
“You’re over my head, I’m out of my mind
Thinking I was born in the wrong time
One of a kind, living in a world gone plastic
Baby, you’re so classic “
Melodia/Ditty (and some Krissy/Spark)
I don’t have a lot to type here, other than when I looked at my notes I realized I had named Piper either Phifer or Luter… If we don’t want to stick with Lucien… anyway, here she is. I had a drawing of Piper holding her, but it looked so awful compared to your gorgeous drawing of him with a child I could’t bring myself to upload it. It was a little uncanny though because the poses were exactly the same.
Since we’re not having the world be Neverland exactly, instead of having them wear animal suits like the lost boys, can they wear little whiskers and ears and masks and be dressed as little rats? Like the ones he lead out of town in the folklore? Or is that too weird? This was the only good idea I got from looking at my Monster High/Ever After High versions of Melodia XD
Also, when I was thinking about Piper the other day (when I mused about the whole ‘you should be thanking me,’ bit) I drew some Krissy/Spark
- I just drew this one today. The others are old, before I imagined Spark and Melodia in the same space. I tried to revise her to see if they’d mesh well at all. I need to tweak her look though, as she appears too much like Andrayia in these pictures. “Vati” is the name for ‘daddy’ in Hamelin.
- Suitable for a flashback scene maybe?
- dressessssssss. I never draw stuff like this. You can tell I was sick.
- I like his design but he is lacking all the charisma we want him to have.
- This is my favorite picture of her, but I don’t know if having her be 14 would make any sense in Loose Canon.
- I think this was the picture you were remembering. She loves music, but it’s hard to know if that was a natural joy or Piper’s Enchanting.
Piper Musings and Self Indulgences
So, I will try to put my thoughts into words about Piper, as I’m messing with him in my head. CallyAnn suggested the idea of incorporating a Peter Pan element into Piper’s design. While this initially opens up quite an interesting angle on a villain (and certainly solves the ‘hot guy’ problem) the longer I thought about it the more worried I became that such a character simply would not fulfill the hopes we have for Piper being the main villain. I know CallyAnn is attached to the idea of Piper not knowing or caring who Spark is at first, a concept I’m partial to as well. The only way I can imagine a Peter Pan like character not knowing their own opposition is in a bratty know it all way, like “I don’t know who you are and I don’t care ’cause I’m just here to do what I want nah nah!” Otherwise I perceive him as being immediately interested in Spark, as either an ally and playmate, or challenge and therefore a source of amusement. The disinterest we start to dabble in when we picture him as being unaware of her and her intentions to stop him strike me as being much more in line with a slightly older, more aloof character. At the same time we don’t want him too much older, lest he wander into ‘hot guy’ territory or so old that he’s a crony and is on a level with Jafar and Cruella.
Again and again I find myself coming back to Jack Frost as the sort of ‘forever young magic boy’ as the source of my inspiration. While this doesn’t fulfill CallyAnn’s hopes of giving him a Peter Pan angle it does seem to be fitting with our theme of turning character archetypes on their heads. Vahaadi isn’t the hero, he’s the sidekick, and Spark vise versa. I think I kind of want Piper to have Jack’s ‘nice guy’ feel, only it turns out that he’s the villain. I want him to have a gentle and friendly and earnestness to him; not only would children like him, but parents would trust him. He seems sincere and is a good listener and makes lots of open and honest eye contact. He laughs softly and is too humble to accept compliments easily. AND YET, he is the one who is doing so much damage and causing so much destruction.
Someone like him would find Spark unworthy of his attention, with her bossy voice and loud explosions and general harshness and lack of subtlety. If he takes notice of her at all, he sees her as a flash in the pan distraction, not someone to take seriously, unlike the Lorewalkers who seem intent on making his life miserable (nevermind the fact the opposite is really the case.) Until, that is, she actually makes good on her word to ‘take him down.’ After enough fuss she’s able to prove herself a legitimate interference into his plans, so he starts to study her and takes a… different approach. I just can’t get it out of my head the idea of a character like Jack approaching Spark with this easy going, casual, nice guy attitude and saying “Let’s play a game, we’ll have a little fun,” and getting inside her mind by speaking her language. His first step would be to seperate her from Vahaadi as much as possible. He sees Vahaadi as a threat, unable to be charmed and capable of monopolizing Spark’s attention, as well as occasionally serving as the voice of reason.
I think maybe an episode could be devoted to him trying to win Spark over, once he’s decided he can’t afford to ignore her anymore. Eventually Spark would be pushed between choosing to help Piper or choosing to hold true to her word with the Lorewalkers. The decision is easy for her to make once she presses Piper on if his offer also extends to Vahaadi and he says no. Spark takes up her mantel as a superhero and tells Piper that they can never be friends, as long as he’s determined to carry out his quest. The plot carries on as we’ve previously discussed from here.
I think a Peter Pan Piper would be too similar to Spark, simply due to the ‘forever a child’ mentality they’d both share. If we made him some sort of twisted form of Peter Pan (Say something ruined his canon and he was forced to grow up; he’s forever bitter and goes around ruining other canons as well) Spark would sympathize with him too much and wouldn’t be able to ‘destroy him.’ But a Piper like Jack would *almost* fool her, *almost* win her trust, *almost* lure her away… but he’s just not crazy enough.
ANYWAY I’m not sure any of that made sense, but it’s what led to the drawings I posted. In other news, I heard a song on the radio (Gold by Brit Nicole) and the lyrics suddenly validated my desire to pull a common manga trope and draw characters not normally clothes in royal wear in outrageously fancy and royal clothes. Ex: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g1DYCAvkmkw/U0HptYnNS2I/AAAAAAAAA08/BTcrDWLZjPk/s1600/SOREDEMO+SEKAI+WA+UTSUKUSHII+2014ANI.jpg )
But as I was drawing this Tephra and Vitiator were practically gaping and sputtering and begging for a drawing of THEM this way, WHAT WAS I THINKING that I drew Vahaadi and Spark instead!? So, I owe them some tropey art. Maybe tomorrow 😉
The chorus of the song reminded me of one of the pep talks Spark would give Vahaadi “Don’t let anybody tell you that you’re not loved, and don’t let anybody tell you that you’re not enough. There are days when we’re all feeling like we’re messed up, but the truth is that we’re all diamonds in the rough.”
“We Go Where No One Goes”
After seeing “How to Train Your Dragon 2” it occurs to me that if you can fly, why wouldn’t you free fall through the clouds for the heck of it? Yet, somehow, this had never occurred to me before seeing Hiccup do it. Anyway, here’s this. It’s probably not at all how Vahaadi’s carpet works, but it’s a cute off-idea.
Inspired by this song:
“I want to show you something.”
Spark took Vahaadi gently by the wrist as she leapt in the air. Grudgingly he unfurled his Carpet, the tapestry snapping to life as he sat expectantly in its center. Letting go of his arm, Spark gestured for him to follow then shot upwards, through the clouds. She speed further and further from the ground, the horizons bending and vanishing around her. Concentrating with all her might she held her breath and plunged through the atmosphere, breaking into the utter stillness and silence of space. Though normally this sort of feat would be impossible, even for her, Vahaadi’s mood had required a change of surroundings. (read: Spark asked and Evie said ‘yes, you can go into space just this once.’)
Delighted at the complete lack of gravity, Spark felt even lighter than usual. She oriented herself as best she could, looked over her should to make sure Vahaadi was still following her, then sped towards her goal: the brilliantly glowing full moon. As soon as she was close enough to have landed on it if she had wished, she turned to Vahaadi. Edging close enough to be shoulder to shoulder she directed his attention towards the planet from which they had just come. “That.” She said with satisfaction. “The Earth. Look how small is seems from here! And so white too. It’s a little blueish green, but mostly it just looks like a ball of clouds, like a marble floating in the universe.” Spark paused, glancing at Vahaadi and trying to read him. He didn’t meet her gaze. In fact, he hardly seemed to be listening. But he wasn’t scowling or rolling his eyes, so she continued. “But YOU know and I know that there’s so much more to Earth than just a bunch of clouds. Once you get closer, you can see all the things that live on the Earth, what’s been built, what’s been destroyed, what each person is doing right now! Some things will be terrible. But some things will be grand. You can’t say that everything on Earth is right or wrong, because there’s too much going on and it’s too complex. Vahaadi, you’re like the Earth. You can let people get to know you better, exposing your faults but also your strengths, or you can distance yourself, and just seem like a marble.”
She placed a hand lovingly on his shoulder and smiled. “I know you don’t want me to know the real you, because you think its too bad, too terrible. But that isn’t ALL you are. I know there are good things about you! I just wish you could also see them.”
((This was inspired from listening to “Demons” by Imagine Dragons after CallyAnn and I both agreed it’s a very fitting song for Vahaadi. She was so right when she said it’s the feelings expressed in that song that Spark wants to respond to with the song “Brave.”
Spark’s anti-gravity hair is fun to draw, but frames her face weirdly. Her head looks too big for her body with all that wild hair XD))
