In Frozen, I chalked Hans’ face-heel-turn up to poor writing, but I stumbled across a discourse applauding Disney for creating a sociopath villain. I’d heard the term before, but I didn’t really know what it meant or how it differed from a psychopath. Today I came upon another article about sociopaths, but this one wasn’t about a made up prince-charming-gone-bad. It was about a real man that kidnapped, mutilated, and murdered a real human child. As I was reading about the traits of a sociopath, I was alarmed to find that many coincided with Vahaadi’s nature. deceitful, pleasure-seeking, impulsive…dangerous. As I was scrolling through this site, my eye caught your quote by Sylvia Plath and my blood ran a little cold. While Vahaadi was never intended to be a good person, I hate to think of him being as far gone as kidnapper, child rapist and brutal murderer.

However, Counting Stars centers me. it helps me get into Vahaadi’s head perhaps more than anything else. Vahaadi is not a sociopath for one very important reason: he DOES have a moral compass. It is, unfortunately, so badly battered that he can’t always get a clear reading off of it, but he does know that what he does is wrong, and not just when he gets caught. He finds no particular glee in being bad, he just feels like he doesn’t know how to do anything else.

Sociopaths are also said to have no true feelings or connections to others, and nothing could be further from the truth of Vahaadi’s existence. He IS his feelings. He is deeply, passionately, exquisitely, painfully engrossed in his emotions and his need for other people.

The truth is, I think part of Vahaadi wishes he WERE a sociopath. He thinks he’d love to just not care anymore, and think of nothing but perusing his own pleasure and entertainment, regardless of who got hurt. I’m sure this is what drove him to sell his soul.

But, at the end of the day, Vahaadi is not a sociopath. He has done a lot of bad (including murder) but it isn’t because he is devoid of feeling. On the contrary, he is tormented by his feelings and doesn’t know what to do with himself.

Wow, this is some great character exposition/exploration! No, Vahaadi is not a sociopath. He’s too addicted to the presence and approval of others. He needs, desires and wants others in order to feel fulfilled. Sociopaths see people as objects to be used but Vahaadi don’t see anyone that way except himself. T_T

I think Sylvia’s quote suits Vahaadi but a sociopath’s would read “The things which I desire most will destroy you in the end.”

Have you heard “Come and Get it” by Selena Gomez? It’s kind of a stupid song but the line “I know this love will be the death of me, but at least I’ll die happily” seems to suit Vahaadi not really about Tryvnah but rather his love affair with the edgy lifestyle he leads.

Great insights! I think you’re right about the sociopath version of the quote.

Ugh, yes, I have heard that sign, and it creeps me out. It sounds really slutty and scary. I would never want to give someone that kind of invitation. It’s like she’s asking to be raped. X_x Unfortunately, that is definitely the kind of attitude Vahaadi has; he views himself as an object, like you pointed out.
